據指，一隻老鼠每天僅需1盎司（約28克）的食物就能維生，牠們每窩可生下多達12隻幼崽。在不到1年的壽命中，一隻老鼠可以生下5到7窩幼崽。

紐約市衞生局的害蟲防治服務社區介入部門主管Alexa Albert認為，最好的對策是「斷糧」，即切斷老鼠的食物來源，迫使牠們花更多時間尋找食物。

目前，當局正在哈林區使用高科技測繪工具追蹤老鼠，透過手機App記錄的街道數據，監控老鼠活動並制定滅鼠計劃。

紐約市民傑西卡·桑切斯表示：「不久前，當你倒垃圾時，會有五隻老鼠跑出來」，她提到自己甚至不敢讓兒子坐在地上，但她指出，她所在社區的老鼠數量已明顯減少。
